Each game day, I prepare myself.
No longer is it fun to get ready to watch Instanity play out right before my eyes. For the definition of insanity, I defer to Albert Einstein. Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.
We keep playing silly games. We keep winning silly prizes. But what do I know as a casual Detroit Red Wings fan?
What I do know is that the Detroit Red Wings are challenging me to see the silver lining in this sinking season. There are endless reasons to be upset with whoever you would like to be with the Detroit Red Wings, but right now, I want to focus on more positive things.
Plenty of new faces have arrived in Hockeytown, so I’m excited to share my thoughts.
Here are my seven current Detroit Red Wings
This list is purely subjective and my personal preference. It’s not based on any fancy stats or eye tests.
1 Lucas Raymond
I’m not sure that I have to type much for Lucas Raymond as my number one on the Detroit Red Wings. He’s got the fire, determination, and effectiveness. Raymond’s not ever satisfied with his results. Although he’s still a young man, he inspires me whenever I watch him.
2 Jonatan Berggren
Anyone who knows me might be shocked Jonatan Berggren isn’t my number one. If Raymond didn’t play for the Detroit Red Wing, we’d have a different conversation. Berggren brings fun and energy to the team. Regardless of where he tops out, I will enjoy watching Berggren as long as I can.
3 Sebastian Cossa
Nope, Sebastian Cossa hasn’t played a game in the National Hockey League (NHL). This fact doesn’t change the fact that he’s on the roster. Once he gets playing, if you haven’t had the privilege of watching Cossa with the Grand Rapids Griffins over the last two seasons, you’ll be in for a treat. If you’ve gone along on this ride, it should be pretty easy to see why. Cossa is as competitive as a player gets. Yet, he still has fun and brings energy to the game that he loves to play. He’s also different than any goaltender I’ve watched, so that’s always a plus. Yes, I understand he likely will return to the Grand Rapids Griffins without seeing any playing time. No I'm not going to throw a fit about it. Love Ville Husso and hope he does well.
4 Dylan Larkin
Captain, my captain. This year has been a struggle for every single individual involved with the Detroit Red Wings. Dylan Larkin is no different. The challenges he’s faced haven’t deterred my love of Larkin. He’s still the engine of this team. He might be taking things just a tad too seriously this season without the likes of Robby Fabbri or David Perron, but hopefully, he can recover some of the spark that’s dwindling sooner rather than later.
5 Marco Kasper
If this list is any indication of what I value, Marco Kasper shouldn’t come as a surprise. He’s always doing his best. I know they’re all professional athletes who give their all, but Kasper is special. Aside from the four people listed above him, I don’t think anyone’s compete level surpasses Kasper’s. I feel guilty that he’s this low on my list, he could easily be number one through four.
6-7 Moritz Seider & Simon Edvinsson (or Simon Edvinsson & Moritz Seider)
They’re kind of a duo now. I can’t have one without the other, as they are just so darn good together. While I dreamed they would be fun to watch, I didn’t think they’d be this great this soon in young Simon Edvinsson’s career. Moritz Seider is serving as a great “veteran” presence for Edvinsson as they face the toughest competition in the NHL night in and night out. I couldn’t ask for anything more from either. Their personalities are great, too. Couldn’t place them higher on my list because I suck.
These are my favorites, but who are your favorite current Detroit Red Wings players?
