The Detroit Red Wings are playing with some key pieces missing. Between Dylan Larkin and J.T. Compher being injured up the middle, they also missed their muscle in Klim Kostin, who’s injured. On top of that, David Perron was suspended after Saturday’s fireworks, which still leaves many fans puzzled.

During Tuesday night’s game, it was announced that Detroit Red Wings forward David Perron will appeal his suspension. However, they are still without some big pieces. For Detroit, they had to have plenty of players step up to find success.

Let’s just say this: that did not happen, even in a victory. The Red Wings played sloppy at times early on. The Blues’ first goal was a lot of Red Wings players standing and watching, allowing Brandon Saad to pound one home. But on top of that, one of the later goals from Kevin Hayes only came from a tough backhander from Moritz Seider, who set up the Blues to get into scoring position.

Jake Walman got a revenge goal, scoring one against his former team. Which is nice to see after some tough performances since his injury a few weeks back. Jonatan Berggren is making the most of his return to the NHL, adding another goal to his credit with his nice tuck and back-handing a rebound home for the goal.

Detroit Red Wings got lucky against the Blues with third-period efforts.

With the absences in the forward core, the Red Wings had to have players step up. It struggled to happen. It worked in some regard, but for the most part, what the forward core did was a bit disappointing. Plus, Ville Husso continues to be a problem between the pipes.

Running a three-goalie tandem or two-goalie tandem certainly will not help Husso at this point. The Red Wings goaltending continues to be a problem and is worrisome moving forward. Something’s got to give; it might be time for a Reimer/Lyon tandem. Regardless of the win, Husso remains a liability between the crease.

Let’s not just focus on the negatives. The Red Wings were able to come out on top. They battled back in the third period and scored a couple of goals with the help of a 50th career goal from Lucas Raymond.

Plus, Patrick Kane continues to look good. The veteran is still working into the forward core, which is missing many pieces. Kane’s getting his legs under him, but the hands sure do look like they used to.

It’s been good to see Kane get settled in with his new organization, and he looks exceptional on the power play. Even if the scoring chances are not coming directly from him, having him out there to create space has been a bright spot for Kane in his time with Detroit.

The Red Wings were able to battle back, fighting through the third with a couple of goals, including a late empty-netter, to make it a 6-4 victory. Detroit will have to play better than they did on Tuesday against the Carolina Hurricanes if they want to drum up a win.
