The Detroit Red Wings should be thrilled with how things are going for one of their signees. This off-season, the Red Wings went out and signed J.T. Compher. They added Compher on a five-year, $25.5 million contract, locking him up through the 2027-28 season.

The 28-year-old forward has carved out a solid career in the NHL, having spent seven seasons with the Colorado Avalanche before signing in Detroit ahead of the season. The Detroit Red Wings got themselves a good one in Compher.

Especially since the team went out and signed Andrew Copp last year to a five-year, $28.125 million contract, Copp was coming off a big season, and there was hope he could replicate things in Detroit, but it has not quite happened.

But, with Compher, there has been immediate scoring, and lately, he keeps on churning out the offense, which is great. If Detroit can get this type of performance out of Compher for the entire year, they will have a solid new member of the top six moving forward.

It’s still early in the season, and there’s plenty of time left, but it’s been good to see how well Compher is fitting in, in his new home. While Dylan Larkin missed some time last week, Compher was able to jump right into the 1C role and get the job done quite well.

Through 23 games of the season, Compher has six goals and 13 assists for 19 total points on the campaign. He’s on pace for around 67-ish points, give or take, which would be a career-best. This comes after he already posted career-best numbers during the 2022-23 season.

He’s got five points through his last five games played, and he continues to find ways to get involved in the offense. While Copp has not quite lived up to his expectations, the deal with Compher looks like Detroit got themselves a good one.

He’s slated to be here for the next five years, so seeing him get off to a good start is great. If he can impact the Red Wings offense a bit in 2023-24 and beyond, this signing will only look better and better down the line.

Suppose Compher can continue to tap into this offense and get things done in the Red Wings’ top-six; it will continue to work out well for Detroit moving forward. The offense keeps showing up as of late, and overall, he looks good out there.

With Patrick Kane’s signing, it will stir up some new line combinations. So, being able to flex around the players in the top six, and get Compher involved with some new linemates is going to be good.

Compher may end up alongside Kane and Alex DeBrincat if Derek Lalonde chooses to keep Dylan Larkin together with Lucas Raymond. But time will tell.
