Detroit Red Wings goaltending could be a major problem without fixes

The Detroit Red Wings may have a goaltending problem. While they have their goalie of the future, there is indeed reason to be concerned with the teams’ goaltending situation. It seems like time to press the panic button, even if the Red Wings got off to a hot start.

It does not even start with the Detroit Red Wings struggles as of late or the tough game against the Rangers on Tuesday, but Ville Husso certainly has some room to improve. Even though the Red Wings have churned out some wins, there have been some things to be concerned about with the netminders.

As Bob Heyrman recently wrote, it might be time to give Husso a sit-down and turn the reins over to James Reimer for a few games. Heyrman mentioned some of the struggles that Husso has had early on, that even with wins, his goals against average and save percentage have not been great.

After Tuesday night’s game, Husso has a 3.57 GAA and a .890 SV% through his nine games played. Certainly, this is not what the Red Wings were hoping for from Husso. But, since Reimer has played well, why not roll the dice with him and see what happens?

Detroit Red Wings goaltending could become a problem.

Husso’s rough start to the 2023-24 season is undoubtedly problematic. Even with Reimer doing well in the backup role, Husso’s tough start is a problem in the long haul. In 2022-23, Husso ran out of gas, and his lack of durability led to struggles down the line.

However, Husso vowed to spend this off-season resting up and then working on ways to be the team’s primary netminder and be “the guy” for them early on. But looking at how things are going early on in 2023-24, there has to be concern for how things could go the rest of the way.

The Red Wings’ offense is firing on all cylinders and is finding ways to score in bunches, which spots Husso some support, but with numbers, as he has managed in 2023-24, it could be a big problem.

While the Red Wings have Reimer and Alex Lyon in the organization, they will work with Riemer for now. But, if things do not improve with Husso, and Reimer starts to struggle at all, things could very much become a big problem.
