The Detroit Red Wings are off to a great start. The early parts of the 2023-24 season have been good. There’s been plenty to be excited about for Red Wings fans through the early goings. The offense is fully functional and finding ways to get things done.

Overall, the Detroit Red Wings are tied with a couple of teams at the top of the league for most goals per game, with a 4.75 GF/G rate early on; things are clicking. It’s been four games, so it may not be the best sample size, but it speaks to Detroit’s solid start.

On top of that, the Red Wings special teams are also off to a good start. Special teams have been a problem in recent years for Detroit, so it’s good to see things working at a high clip early on. Even in a small sample size, Detroit’s getting it done on the power play, which is important.

Looking at things, the Red Wings lead the league at converting on the power play to this point. They have a 46.2% success rate, which is the best in the league, ahead of the Toronto Maple Leafs, who are in second at 40.0% on the young season.

It’s a young season, and a nearly 50% conversion rate is far from sustainable, but it’s a good feeling to see the Red Wings having success early on with their power play units. Hopefully, they can continue to convert at a high rate.

If there’s one thing that the Red Wings have struggled with, it’s their special teams game. They even brought in Dan Bylsma a while back, hoping to fix things. Alex Tanguay was brought in to do the same. The improvements were meager.

However, as the 2023-24 season kicks off, it’s an entirely different tone. The influx of weapons seems to be paying dividends. Things have considerably changed, and the power play units look much different than in years past.

With the new off-season additions, they beefed things up a bit. They added some new weapons that have been off to an exceptional start to kick off the 2023-24 season. The added firepower has seemingly helped things on the special teams’ front.

Either way, the point is that the power play has been a strong suit for the Red Wings in the early parts of the 2023-24 season. It’s something to keep an eye on, hoping they can continue performing at a reasonable rate.
