The Detroit Red Wings are getting ready to kick off the 2023-24 season. Training camp is complete, and the team has begun their slate of pre-season games as they get things tuned up for the regular season.

One of the things that the Detroit Red Wings want to iron out is their goaltending situation. While there’s room to have a conversation about James Reimer and Alex Lyon and how the backup job will shake out, having Reimer around should help the team for sure in 2023-24.

The focus of the Red Wings goalie situation will be Ville Husso and how things go in year two in Hockeytown. For the Red Wings, Husso wants to come out and have a better year in 2023-24 since he ran out of steam in 2022-23.

There’s been talk of Husso aiming to improve his durability, to really lock down that no.1 role for the Red Wings this season. It sounds like Husso worked on things this off-season and seems to be up to the test this season.

Detroit Red Wings aiming for Ville Husso to show improvement.

In 2022-23, Husso played in 56 games for the Red Wings, where he managed a 26-22-7 record. He played to a .896 save percentage and a 3.11 goals-against average. It’s certainly not the performance the Red Wings were hoping for.

When the Red Wings traded for Husso before the 2022-23 season, there was some excitement that the team was able to get their guy or at least find themselves a solid addition to being the top option between the crease moving forward.

Though, the performance was lackluster as Husso ran out of steam at the end of the 2022-23 season. His season ended early, and the Red Wings did not exactly get the type of performance that they were looking for from Husso.

However, the Red Wings seem to think that he can come out in 2023-24 and provide better results for the team. If he can really lock down the No. 1 spot this year, the Red Wings should be able to get better results from the tandem overall.

For the Red Wings, a better year from Husso and a strong performance from Reimer as the backup could allow them to have a good season in 2023-24 regarding their goaltending crew. While Husso’s first year in Detroit did not go as planned, there’s hope that year two can improve for the Red Wings netminder.

He’s in a position to improve this season; he just needs to go out and prove that he can make it happen for the Red Wings.
