The Detroit Red Wings have already had an excellent off-season. They went out and signed some key pieces on the free agent market and made a big splash when they traded for forward Alex DeBrincat in the blockbuster move with the Ottawa Senators.

But there could be another move in store for the Detroit Red Wings. It’s not one that’s been initiated by the Red Wings, but rather a former foe. There have been rumors that Patrick Kane is looking to reunite with Alex DeBrincat to play alongside the forward again.

Kane has expressed interest in coming to Detroit to play alongside DeBrincat. While Detroit has not made any progress on a deal with Kane, Kane was rumored to be open to a deal. It’ll surely be interesting to see how things unfold with this idea.

Now, the last time I suggested the Red Wings consider signing Kane, it ruffled a lot of feathers amongst the readers. But, the idea has gained some traction from other media outlets, and it seems like Kane to Detroit has a chance to happen if Steve Yzerman were to try and get a deal done.

Detroit Red Wings may be looking into signing Patrick Kane.

With all of this in mind, the idea of Kane coming in and playing a role with the Red Wings forward core this season seems a bit less far-fetched than it did a few months back. He’s a longtime veteran of the league and one of the most skilled forwards of the past decade.

Before I go any further, it’s evident that Kane played for the Blackhawks and was on the team amid the scandal involving the sexual assault against Kyle Beach. There’s a litany of articles out there covering the story, providing quotes from former/current players, including Kane, and a million things to be said.

But this piece is about Kane’s performance on the ice. Kane has continued to play in the National Hockey League amid the news breaking and investigations. He will be playing on a team this fall, whether it’s the Red Wings or not. I’m simply here to report the rumors and hand over my thoughts on how Kane would positively impact this team with his performance on the ice.

Kane’s 34-year-old forward, who’s been around for 16 years in the NHL. He knows how to score, he’s a natural playmaker, and even as he ages in the league, he still finds ways to score and make things happen.

In 2022-23, he was traded from the Blackhawks to the New York Rangers, hoping to send him on a run for the Stanley Cup. Kane would finish short of that goal, but not before logging 73 regular season games, scoring 21 goals, adding 37 assists, and scoring 58 total points.

The offense is still there. For a player who wants to join the team and come in to play alongside DeBrincat, who is the Red Wings’ new asset on offense, there’s got to be some thought about what he could bring to the table with his performance on the ice.

There will be some outcry if the Red Wings sign him, but for their 2023-24 roster, it sure would be a nice boost to add Kane in and reap the benefits of his offensive output. So far, it’s just rumors, and there’s no traction that we know of.

But there’s a chance that Kane could be joining the Red Wings roster if Yzerman and the front office brass were to pull the trigger on a deal.
