The Detroit Red Wings went out and brought in Ville Husso last summer. He was a massive part of the team’s success in 2022-23, being a workhorse between the pipes. The only issue with Husso was how much time he relied on in the crease.
The Detroit Red Wings were forced to rely on Husso in a much higher number of games this season than in years prior, resulting in them running the ship aground. Husso could not stay healthy all the way through, and frankly, at times, the tiredness seemed to be an issue.
Regarding things moving forward, the Red Wings have to look for their netminder to provide more consistency. The team needs him to churn out the starts and be ready to go. Husso realizes this and is aiming to be more durable in 2023-24.
For the Red Wings, this means going out and being peppered by shots one night and turning around and being locked in the crease two days later. The team had some battling in their backup goalie slot, and Husso needs to be able to remain healthy next season.
Detroit Red Wings need more durability out of Ville Husso.
The Red Wings certainly pushed Husso in 2022-23, and he is aiming to come back and stay healthy and roll through starts left and right. There’s plenty of reason to believe that Husso will be better prepared next season.
After all, he was not horrible; Husso was solid. He played in 56 games for the Red Wings with a 26-22-7 record, a .896 save percentage, and a 3.11 goals-against average. The Red Wings have to be hoping for a better finish to the season.
At times he showed flashes of a netminder that would be a big piece of the puzzle for the Red Wings’ playoff visions. He held them in the race this season before they fizzled out, but the Tigers have to be looking to see continued improvements out of Husso.
If he can come back in 2023-24, stay healthy, and churn out starts for the Red Wings, it will be good for the team. On top of that, the team has a variable backup goalie spot that needs to be addressed.
So it will be interesting to see what the Red Wings netminder battery looks like by the time the 2023-24 season comes around. The Red Wings will rely on Husso as the number one option and hope he can stay healthy and handle the workload better in no.1, that’s for sure.
