The Detroit Red Wings have completed the 2022-23 season as things were wrapped up last week. That playoffs are underway, and the attention of the Red Wings has shifted into the off-season. That means it is officially everyone’s least favorite time of the NHL calendar year. Lottery time.

The results of the NHL Draft Lottery have not been too kind to the Detroit Red Wings in years past when it comes to moving up or earning that elusive first-overall pick. However, the Red Wings have done exceptionally well with their picks in recent years (Simon Edvinsson, Marco Kasper, Lucas Raymond, Moritz Seider, etc.).

But with the postseason underway, it means that the odds for the 2022-23 NHL Draft Lottery were able to be set. NHL dot com has the full details, but the odds have become official on who has the best shot to earn the first overall pick. Spoiler: It’s not the Red Wings.

However, the Red Wings do have a chance to land the first-overall pick and a chance to move up, so let’s dive into what the Red Wings lottery odds look like and what might happen as the lottery drawing in May inches closer.

Detroit Red Wings have a slim chance to move up in the 2023 NHL Draft Lottery.

The Red Wings competed for a postseason spot leading up to the end of the year when things fell apart. So they are not near the top of the draft lottery odds, but they’re also not at the very bottom with the slimmest chance.

The Red Wings will have a 5.0% chance to move up and take over the first overall draft pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, presumably to select Connor Bedard. However, the Red Wings have not had the best luck when it comes to moving up the draft board, so they’re likely hoping to stay where they are or maybe just move up into the top three.

The 2022-23 NHL Entry Draft has a ton of talent near the top of the draft board, with plenty of players to be excited about. Early mock drafts have the Red Wings ending up with Ryan Leonard, which would be a win.

But the Red Wings have to see there’s a slim chance to move up to 1:1, but plenty of reason to believe they will walk away with yet another big-time prospect wherever they fall in the draft order come to Draft Lottery time.
