The Detroit Red Wings have officially played their final game of the year at Little Caesars Arena from the 2022-23 campaign. The Red Wings took on the Stars, who came to town for Game no. 80 in the last week of Red Wings hockey for the 2022-23 season.
Things would not go great on fan appreciation night for the Detroit Red Wings faithful. The Stars had a hold of the momentum early and continued through all 60 minutes. It was an uneventful night for the Red Wings, and they have to shake it off quickly.
While things did not go well for Ville Husso, he may very well be back in the crease tomorrow to face off against the Hurricanes. The Red Wings dropped their finale at home but still have two more road games in this one.
Let’s get into the “action” from tonight’s loss to Dallas.
Detroit Red Wings embarrassed by Stars on home ice.
1st Period
The Detroit Red Wings could not get anything going on an early powerplay, and Dallas Stars forward Roope Hintz was able to tally first, to put Dallas up about five minutes into the first period. Hintz cut to the net and was able to tip in a beautiful pass from Thomas Harley to make it 1-0 in favor of Dallas.
Soon after, the Stars would go out and pick up another goal to make it 2-0. A nice setup from Hintz left a puck for Esa Lindell, who showed off a quick release to let it rip and beat Ville Husso. It was indeed a goal that Husso had to want back.
The Detroit Red Wings were outplayed early on. Ty Dellandrea got an excellent feed from the corner, catching the pass and letting it rip to beat Husso to make it a 3-0 game. The Red Wings immediately opted to make a goaltending change, putting in Magnus Hellberg after the Stars’ third goal.
2nd Period
It did not take long for the Stars to get things going once again. A late first-period penalty from Detroit Red Wings forward Taro Hirose carried over into the second period. It gave the Stars a power play to start things off, and Stars forward Jason Robertson was able to make it happen.
A nice wrist shot from the point on the powerplay beat Hellberg, getting through a crowded net front to find the twine and give the Stars a 4-0 lead early in the second period. Once again, the Stars continued to get it done. It was Joe Pavelski getting his stick on a shot from Miro Heiskanen and re-directing it into the back of the net.
When it rains, it certainly pours. The Stars continued to find the twine and made it 6-0 in favor of the Stars after the halfway point in this one, with a goal from Jamie Benn, who got a piece of a shot from Miller, getting into the back of the net for the sixth goal of the game.
It may sound shocking, but the Red Wings scored one late in the second period from the stick of David Perron. He scored his 24th goal of the year, beating Jake Oettinger. He caught a pass near the top of the zone, stepped in on the netminder, let a wrist shot go from the dot off to Oettinger’s left, and beat him to make it 6-1.
3rd Period
The Stars started out the third period on the powerplay. Nothing would come of it, but the Stars did swap out their netminders, giving Jake Oettinger the rest of the night off. The Stars turned to Scott Wedgewood, who would finish out Monday night’s contest.
Nothing else came of the third period. The Red Wings would end up falling 6-1 to the Stars after an uneventful third period. The Red Wings are back in action tomorrow night on a quick trip out to Carolina to take on the Hurricanes.
