Detroit Red Wings may be shopping Jake Walman.

Perhaps to the chagrin of many Detroit Red Wings fans, Yzerman could be working on shopping defender Jake Walman around this trade deadline season. Since Walman is an unrestricted free agent, there’s a chance someone takes a flier looking to add a piece to their defense core for some depth.

Walman started settling into his own in 2022-23 and found a good spot with the Red Wings’ defense core. He really has done an excellent job being a productive member of the Red Wings’ second-pairing.

Through the first half of the season, Walman logged 32 games, with five goals and three assists for eight total points. He’s not putting up points at an alarming rate or even putting himself in an All-Star category, but he’s someone who could be sold to a team panicking about defensive depth.

After all, he was the product of a trade deadline deal from last year when Yzerman flipped Nick Leddy to St. Louis to bring in Leddy and Oskar Sundqvist. Extending Walman and keeping him around for the Red Wings has been more of the talk heard, but flipping him for draft capital and allowing them to stockpile some future picks might be too attractive.

As the trade deadline continues to inch closer and closer, Walman seeing an uptick in offense might be the cause for someone to inquire about him to Yzerman. He’s someone that could be shopped around, hoping a team will bite.
