The Detroit Red Wings are preparing for their match-up with the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday. The Sharks are in town for a game against the Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena. It’s a game that Detroit should win but could easily fall victim to their kryptonite of losing to very beatable teams.

But there may be more going on off the ice with the Detroit Red Wings to keep an eye on. With the trade deadline starting to creep onto the horizon, the Red Wings could be looking to make a splash. I don’t mean Bo Horvat, but rather some of the Sharks’ assets.

The Sharks have forwards that the Red Wings could easily be looking to poach via trade. After all, the two teams just made a trade to flip-flop AHL forwards when they brought in Jasper Weatherby. But the Sharks are in town and are giving Detroit’s front office a front-row seat to what they may offer.

The Red Wings need to take Tuesday as a chance to evaluate the Sharks’ trade-worthy forwards to see if there is a reason to try and strike a deal. Steve Yzerman is known to take risks and make moves to protect the future, but he might be aiming to buy some assets that provide benefits right now.

Detroit Red Wings get a front-row seat to scout Sharks talent.

The Sharks have a couple of fringey forwards who might make a bottom-six impact with the Red Wings that they can keep an eye on. But the most exciting player to keep an eye on is Timo Meier, who very much so should be on the Red Wings’ radar.

Meier is a pending restricted free agent who is still eligible for arbitration. He has not hammered out an extension for the future like Tomas Hertl did last spring, and he could easily be someone the Sharks are willing to part ways with at the right price.

He’s a 26-year-old forward with a left-handed shot. He’s been in the league for seven years after being selected during the first round of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. He set a career-high in points in 2021-22 and is having a great season once again.

In 2022-23 for the Sharks, Meier has played in 48 games where he has 20 goals and 27 assists for 47 total points. He would bring a significant amount of benefit to the Red Wings’ offense if he were added.

Meier would jump right into the Red Wings’ top six and immediately benefit the team. With him being in town, the Red Wings should use this chance to let the front office do some easy scouting as the Sharks take on the Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena.
