Last but certainly not least, our Detroit Red Wings reverse retro.

First, what it is. It is a jersey with a striping pattern matching the NHL 75th anniversary jerseys from 1991-1992, replicas of the 1927-1928 Detroit Cougars jerseys.

This time, the team decided to add black to the striping while keeping the “Detroit” wordmark and name and numbers white. Overall, I’m very conflicted about how I feel about these jerseys. I think they are better than the jerseys released last time out for Reverse Retro. My full thoughts on the previous Reverse Retro and what I was hoping to see this time out can be found here.

Truthfully, the first time I saw the new Reverse Retros, my gut reaction was that I didn’t like them. But as time progressed, and I had time to look at them more and think about it, they have grown on me. The question is to what degree they have grown on me, and I’m not quite sure yet. I like them better than some other teams’ jerseys, without a doubt.

The fan reaction to the jersey release seems as conflicted as my internal dialogue. I also like some other teams’ jerseys better than ours, without a doubt. Maybe that means they are a middling jersey in this Reverse Retro class, but it is tough to tell.

Some fans really like them, lauding the creativity compared to the last RR edition. Some say this was a missed opportunity to just do a red version of the 75th anniversary without using black and just making the striping white.

Another critique is it looks too much like a Chicago jersey, which is something I can definitely understand. I still think a cream-colored jersey would have been nice, but the use of black as a new color added is a fine addition, especially as a slight nod to the black practice jerseys the Wings once used.
