Trade Deadline: Recap of Red Wings Trades

The NHL Trade Deadline has come and gone and as per usual, Detroit General Manager Steve Yzerman waited until close to the deadline to start announcing trades.  In total, the Red Wings made two trades involving three players leaving Detroit and two players and two draft picks coming to Detroit.

Here is a summary of the deadline activities for Detroit.

Leddy and Witkowski to St. Louis

The Red Wings first trade of the day involved defenseman Nick Leddy and Grand Rapids depth player Luke Witkowski being traded to the St. Louis Blues.

In return, Detroit acquired center Oskar Sundqvist, defenseman Jake Walman and a 2nd round draft pick in 2023.

Oskar Sundqvist is a veteran of 270 NHL games over the last seven seasons.  In 41 games this year, Sundqvist has four goals, 11 assists, 15 points, and a +4 rating.  In his 270 regular season games, Sundqvist has 36 goals, 51 assists, 87 points, and a -7 rating.  Sundqvist has one year remaining on his current contract with a $2.75M cap hit.  Sundqvist can be an UFA after 2023.

Jake Walman replaces Leddy in the lineup on LD.  In 32 games this year, Walman has three goals, three assists, six points, and a +3 rating.  In his brief NHL career, Walman has played 57 regular season games and has four goals, four assists, eight points, and a -3 rating.  Walman currently has a cap hit of $725,000 and he will be a RFA at the end of this season.

Namestnikov to Dallas

The final trade of the day for the Red Wings involved impending UFA forward Vladislav Namestnikov being traded to the Dallas Stars.

In return, Detroit acquire a 4th round pick.

Final Word

If there are any late deals, I will update when I am notified.  A quiet day, but we really didn’t expect much.  Six impending UFA’s that we couldn’t even trade for picks, that tells you something regarding the state of the remainder of this season.  Maybe some of the prospects from Grand Rapids will get a taste of the NHL before the end of the year.
