In perhaps the most embarrassing loss to the season, the bottom-dwelling Arizona Coyotes walloped the Detroit Red Wings, securing a 9-2 win at Little Casear’s Arena.

The Red Wings were dominated from start to finish. The defense had one of its worst showings of the year.

Quite literally the only positive from the game was a goal from Jakub Vrana in his first game of the year.

The teams were tied at one a piece almost halfway through the first period. Then, the Coyotes went on a tear, ripping two straight goals to end the first and then scoring three straight to kick off the second. Vrana’s goal to make it 6-2 only temporarily halted the onslaught. Arizona scored three straight to end the game, taking home two points on the road with a resounding 9-2 win.

The Red Wings schedule has been absolutely brutal of late, with games against some of the best teams in the league (Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning, etc.). Tonight’s home game against the Coyotes was supposed to be a nice way for Detroit to slow things down after such a tough slate. Instead, the Red Wings suffered an embarrassing loss, one that trumps any games prior (this season).

Getting thumped by teams like Tampa Bay and Florida is expected. But Detroit was thumped by a  bottom-two team in the league.  It was an absolute slap in the face to fans that thought this team could make a run to the post-season. In fact, there’s a good chance that the Columbus Blue Jackets are the last team left out of the east, not the Red Wings.

The Red Wings are back at it Thursday night, hosting the Minnesota Wild.
