Red Wings NCAA Prospects Focus: Mastrosimone Playing Exceptionally
Now that the NCAA Christmas Break is behind us and the World Junior Championships were canceled, NCAA teams have resumed action. Carter Mazur continues to lead Detroit Red Wings prospects in scoring in the NCAA. Not far behind is sophomore forward Robert Mastrosimone.
Prospect Focus: Robert Mastrosimone (Boston University)
Robert Mastrosimone is a junior with the Boston University Terriers. In five games since Thanksgiving, Mastrosimone has scored four points and remains second in scoring on Boston and the second highest scoring Red Wings prospect currently playing in the NCAA.
This year, Mastrosimone has scored six goals and 15 points in 20 games. In three years at Boston, Mastrosimone has scored 16 goals, 24 assists, and 40 points in 69 games. Mastrosimone will likely play out his NCAA eligibility next year then sign an entry-level contract with Detroit after he graduates in 2023.
Here is a look at the remaining Detroit prospects that are currently playing in the NCAA.
Carter Mazur (LW)
Carter Mazur is now the highest scoring NCAA prospect in the Detroit system. In 18 games at the University of Denver, Mazur has nine goals, 18 points and a +11 rating. Mazur played one game for Team USA at the recent World Junior Championships and was held without a point. After this season, Mazur has three years of NCAA eligibility remaining before he must be signed to a professional contract with Detroit.
Ryan O’Reilly (RW/C)
Ryan O’Reilly is starting to contribute offensively at Arizona State University. In his sophomore season, O’Reilly has already eclipsed his goal total from his freshman season. In 20 games, O’Reilly has scored five goals and nine points with a -6 rating. O’Reilly has two years of NCAA eligibility remaining before he must be signed to a professional contract with Detroit.
Red Savage (C)
After a slow start, Red Savage is starting to contribute to the Miami University (Ohio) offense. In his last four games, Savage has scored two goals and three points. During his freshman season, Savage has now played 16 games and has recorded three goals, nine points and a -4 rating. Savage played one game for Team USA at the recent World Junior Championships and was held without a point. After this season, Savage has three years of NCAA eligibility remaining before he must be signed to a professional contract with Detroit.
Shai Buium (LD)
Shai Buium continues to contribute to the offense from the defensive position at the University of Denver. During his last six games, Buium scored his first NCAA goal and added two assists. During his freshman season, Buium has played 18 games and recorded one goal, nine points and a +10 rating. After this season, Buium has three years of NCAA eligibility remaining before he must be signed to a professional contract with the Red Wings.
John Adams (RW/C)
John Adams is playing in his make-or-break season at Notre Dame. Adams, playing for his third NCAA team in five years must be signed by this summer or he becomes a free agent. In 20 games this year, Adams has scored two goals and eight points. For his NCAA career, Adams has played 92 games and has scored 16 goals and 43 points with a +17 rating.
Ethan Phillips (C/RW)
Ethan Phillips continues to struggle to stay in the lineup at Boston University. Phillips has now missed five of his teams 20 games this season. In 15 games played this year, Phillips has scored one goal and eight points with a -1 rating. After this season, Phillips has one year of NCAA eligibility remaining before he must be signed to a professional contract with Detroit.
Antti Tuomisto (RD)
Antti Tuomisto continues to play excellent defensively on the powerful University of Denver blueline. The 6’5″ sophomore has played 17 games, and has six assists and an incredible +17 rating. Tuomisto has two years of NCAA eligibility remaining before he must be signed to a professional contract with Detroit.
Sam Stange (RW)
Sam Stange continues to find it difficult to creat offense in the NCAA. Stange is currently in his sophomore year at the University of Wisconsin and has played 22 games. This season, Stange has scored two goals and five points with a -5 rating. After this season, Stange has two years of NCAA eligibility remaining before he must be signed to a professional contract with Detroit.
