8 Red Wings Prospects to Watch in the World Juniors

The Detroit Red Wings have eight prospects playing in next week’s World Junior Championships being played in Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta.  Each of the players have had excellent starts to their seasons and will enjoy playing against the best junior hockey players in the world.

Here is a look at the players and the countries they will represent.

United States

The reigning gold medal team from the 2021 championships will have two Detroit Red Wings prospects.

Carter Mazur was a 3rd round draft pick, 70th overall in the 2021 draft.  Mazur is currently a freshman at the University of Denver.  Denver are currently ranked 8th in the NCAA and Mazur is currently 4th in team scoring.  Going into the WJC-20 tournament, Mazur has played 16 games for the Pioneers and has recorded nine goals, 17 points and a +12 rating.  Mazur will turn 20 in March so, this will be his last opportunity to play in this tournament.

Red Savage was a 4th round draft pick, 114th overall in the 2021 draft.  Savage is currently a freshman at Miami University (Ohio).  Savage is currently 10th in team scoring for the Redhawks.  Going into the WJC-20 tournament, Savage has played 16 games for Miami and has recorded one goal, 7 points and a -4 rating.  At 18, Savage has one more year of eligibility to represent the United States in this tournament.

The reigning silver medal team and this year’s host will also have two Detroit Red Wings prospects.

Donovan Sebrango was a 3rd round draft pick, 63rd overall in the 2020 draft.  Sebrango is currently in his second year of playing professionally for Grand Rapids (AHL).  Going into the WJC-20 tournament, Sebrango has played 20 games for the Griffins and has recorded three assists and a +6 rating.  Sebrango will turn 20 in January so, this will be his last opportunity to play in this tournament.

Sebastian Cossa was a 1st round draft pick, 15th overall in the 2021 draft.  Cossa is currently the #1 goaltender for Edmonton (WHL).  Going into the WJC-20 tournament, Cossa has played 21 games for the Oil Kings and has a record of 15-3-3, with a 2.26 GAA, and a .924 SV%.  Cossa will turn 20 in November so, this will be his last opportunity to play in this tournament.

Sweden

Team Sweden could  have had as many as four players but, they decided to only add two Detroit Red Wings prospects for this year’s tournament.

Theodore Niederbach was a 2nd round pick, 51st overall in the 2020 draft.  Niederbach will return and play in his second and final WJC-20 tournament.  Last year, Niederbach scored two goals in five games for Team Sweden in these championships.  He will be counted on to once again provide offense for Sweden.  Going into this year’s tournament, Niederbach has played 28 games for Frolunda (SHL) and recorded two goals and six points with a +1 rating.

Simon Edvinsson was a 1st round draft pick, 6th overall in the 2021 draft.  Edvinsson is also currently playing for Frolunda (SHL).  Going into the WJC-20 tournament, Edvinsson has played 24 games for Frolunda and has recorded one goal, 12 points and a +4 rating.  At 18, Edvinsson has one more year of eligibility to represent Sweden in this tournament.

Finland

Eemil Viro was a 3rd round pick, 70th overall in the 2020 draft.  Viro will return and play in his second and final WJC-20 tournament.  Last year, Viro picked up two assists in seven games for Team Finland in these championships.  He will be counted on to provide experience on the blueline for Finland.  Going into this year’s tournament, Viro has played 26 games for TPS (Liiga) and recorded one goal and three points with an even +/- rating.

Czech Republic

Jan Bednar was a 4th round pick, 107th overall in the 2020 draft.  Bednar will return and play in his second and final WJC-20 tournament.  Last year, Bednar was the 3rd string goaltender with Team Czech Republic.  He will be counted on to provide experience in goal this year.  Going into this tournament, Bednar has played 19 games for Acadie-Bathurst (QMJHL) and has a record of 10-6-2, with a 3.03 GAA, and a .902 SV%.
