Recap: Moritz Seider scores overtime winner against Islanders

Moritz Seider scored his second overtime goal of the season against the New York Islanders, sealing a 4-3 victory for the Detroit Red Wings. Detroit is now on a five game winning streak.

First Period

The game kicked off with a couple of hits and a bit of extracurricular activity. A cross-check on Moritz Seider gave the Red Wings their first power play of the game. The attempt failed miserably, as the Islanders scored a shorthanded goal.

However, Filip Hronek evened up the score with a well-timed snipe to the top of the net.

Just a few minutes later, Sam Gagner tacked on another goal, giving Detroit their first lead of the day.

Second Period

After an exciting first period, both teams started to get a little choppy on offense, failing to generate consistent shots and pressure. However, New York took advantage of a power play attempt to knot the game back up at two all. After the goal, both teams kicked it in and began to drive the net offensively

The depth continued filling the net, as Givani Smith retook the lead for Detroit, wristing a shot into the net for his second goal of the season.

Third Period

The Red Wings sat back and played prevent defense, trying to escape with a one goal win. The Islanders turned up the pressure in the offensive zone, keeping the ice titled towards Detroit’s defensive zone.

The Islanders finally found the back of the net with just under eight minutes left in the third, cashing in on their second power play attempt of the period. The Red Wings clamped down in the remaining minutes of the period, ensuring that the matchup would head to extra minutes.

Overtime

The two teams traded opportunities in overtime, but it was Detroit’s rookie defenseman that secured the win in OT. Seider ripped a rocket of a shot, scoring his second overtime goal of the season.
