Recap: Red Wings lose third straight after 5-2 rout in Vegas

The Detroit Red Wings have now lost three straight game after losing 5-2 against the Vegas Golden Knights. Detroit now has a sub .500 winning percentage on the season (8-9-2 ).

First Period

The Red Wings controlled most of the first period, netting more shots on goal and spending more time in the offensive zone. However, the offense couldn’t find a way to finish on the created chances. The penalty kill was key for Detroit in the first, stifling two power play attempts from Vegas and keeping the game tied-up.

Second Period

The second period started off with a bang. Two minutes in, after a massive hit on Michael Rasmussen, Adam Erne threw off the gloves to get some revenge. The two tumbled to the ice after trading blows.

The Golden Knights scored two goals in less than three minutes, peppering the net with shots and quality scoring chances in a short span.

Less than a minute later, the Red Wings had a chance to claw their way back into the game with a power play attempt. Detroit just couldn’t find any rhythm in the offensive zone, struggling to comfortably pass the Golden Knights blue line.

Just over halfway through the period, Givani Smith scored his first goal (and point) of the season and cut the lead in down to just one, whacking in a loose puck at the front of the net.

Vegas regained the one goal lead immediately, slapping in a one-timer and scoring right off the draw.

The Golden Knights tacked on another goal to the lead after a capitalizing on a turnover from Detroit.

Third Period

Vegas added on to their lead with a backhand goal just over five minutes into the period.

Just to make things worse for the Wings, Moritz Seider limped off the ice after taking a hard shot with just under five minutes left in the game.

Joe Veleno scored his second goal of the season with under two minutes in the third period.

The Golden Knights came away with a 5-2 victory. The Red Wings have their fourth straight road game Saturday night in Arizona.
