Down 2-0 early, the Columbus Blue Jackets battled back from an early 2-0 deficit to secure a 5-3 win over the Detroit Red Wings.
First Period
The first period was chock-full of sloppy play. Missed passes, turnovers and stalled out offensive series kept the game scoreless as both teams struggled in their opponent’s zones.
It was Detroit’s captain that ended tallied the game’s first goal. Lucas Raymond slipped a pass to Dylan Larkin at the front of the net, who chopped it in for his seventh goal of the season.
Detroit turned up the pressure a bit after taking an early lead, but the first period ended without another score. 1-0 Detroit.
Second period
Columbus came out of the locker room aggressive, tilting the ice towards the Red Wings defensive zone in an attempt to tie up the game.
However, Detroit momentarily halted the Blue Jackets moment with a goal from Michael Rasmussen, his first of the season. Moving up from the blue line, ‘Ras kind of just threw the puck towards the net and it bounced under the goaltender. 2-0 Detroit.
A power play gave Columbus the chance to regain their lost momentum. Again, the Jackets had some quality chances and offensive zone possession, but Thomas Greiss made some excellent saves and retained the two-goal lead.
Just minutes later, another Detroit penalty gave the Jackets their second power play attempt of the game. Greiss continued to lock-down the crease, slamming the door on some quality chances and again, keeping the Wings 2-0 lead.
Even with the two failed attempts on the man advantage, the Blue Jackets continued to battle back into the game. Thirteen minutes in, Columbus finally found the back of the net, knocking in a rebound to make it a 2-1 game.
Just over two minutes later, the Jackets managed to knock in yet another rebound at the front of the net. 2-2.
Third Period
After five minutes of some back on forth play, the Red Wings power play had its first chance of the game. However, a hooking penalty on Sam Gagner cut the power play short, creating just over a minute of four-on-four hockey.
Tyler Bertuzzi almost scored the first goal of the third period eight minutes in, but a high-sticking call negated the tie-breaker and kept the game knotted-up.
The Red Wings retook the lead thanks to Lucas Raymond, who scored his seventh goal of the season with left than seven minutes left in the period. Bertuzzi slipped a pass to Raymond directly at the front of the net, who ripped a one-timer past the goaltender. 3-2 Detroit.
Less than two minutes later, the Blue Jackets capitalized on a breakaway chance to tie the game up at three-all.
The Blue Jackets scored the game winning goal with just over a minute left in the game and tacked on an empty netter with less than ten seconds to go to ice the game.
The Red Wings are back on the road tomorrow night in Dallas.
