The Detroit Red Wings currently have 13 players playing in the NCAA.  Many of these players are now more than one month into their seasons and have played up to 10 games for their respective schools.

Here is a look at the Detroit prospects that have had an impact after the weekend.

Robert Mastrosimone

Robert Mastrosimone remains one of Detroit’s top prospects in the NCAA.  Drafted in the 2nd round, 54th overall in 2019, Mastrosimone is currently a junior at Boston University.  Mastrosimone has played 10 games and has recorded five goals and three assists for the Terriers.  Mastrosimone has one year of eligibility remaining before he must be signed by the Red Wings.

Ethan Phillips plays with Mastrosimone at BU.  Phillips was a 97th overall selection of the Red Wings in 2019.  Last year, Phillips was plagued by an injury that limited him to only one game.  This year, Phillips seems healthy, as he has played all 10 games for BU and has recorded one goal and six points.  Phillips also has one year of NCAA eligibility remaining before he must be signed by Detroit.

John Adams

John Adams has had a very unique career in the NCAA.  He was drafted by the Red Wings in the 6th round in 2017 and was a freshman at Union College that fall.  He played two years at Union before an injury derailed his entire junior year in 2019-20.  He transferred to Providence College and played six games during the pandemic shortened season last year.  He once again transferred, this time to Norte Dame for his senior year.  It has taken Adams some time to adjust to his new team but, he did scored his first goal and was named the 1st star on the weekend.  In nine games this year, Adams has recorded four points.  Adams must be signed by Detroit by August 2022 or he becomes a free agent.

Carter Mazur has had a nice start to his freshman year at the University of Denver. Mazur was a recent draft selection of the Red Wings as he was selected in the 3rd round, 70th overall.  In eight games playing for Denver, Mazur has two goals and three points.

Sam Stange has had a bit of a slow start playing his sophomore year at the University of Wisconsin.  Stange has only scored one goal and added two assists in 10 games.  By comparison, in his freshman season last year, Stange scored six goals and seven points in 29 games.  Stange has two years of NCAA eligibility remaining before he needs to be signed by the Red Wings.

Red Savage is adapting to the NCAA game while playing for Miami (Ohio).  Savage was a recent 4th round draft pick of the Red Wings.  In his freshman season at Miami, Savage has recorded three assists in eight games.

Shai Buium

Shai Buium is Detroit’s top defense prospect currently playing in the NCAA. A recent 2nd round selection, 36th overall, Buium has contributed three assists in eight games playing for the University of Denver.

Carter Gylander

Carter Gylander is Detroit’s only goaltending prospect currently playing in the NCAA.  Gylander was selected in the 7th round of the 2019 draft.  Gylander is currently playing as a sophomore at Colgate University.  In seven games this year, Gylander has a record of 4-3-0, a 3.14 GAA, and a .906 SV%.  Gylander has two years of NCAA eligibility remaining before he needs to be signed by the Red Wings.

Free Agent Goaltending Prospect, Matthew Galajda (Notre Dame)

One goaltender that the Red Wings should have an eye on is Matthew Galajda from Notre Dame.  Galajda’s dad was a high school friend of mine and he has had a terrific career in the NCAA.  He played three seasons at Cornell before he transferred to Notre Dame for his final year of eligibility.  In 92 career games, Galajda has a 65-16-9 record, 19 SO, 1.64 GAA, and a .930 SV%,  It will be interesting to see who signs Galajda to a professional contract at the beginning of the NCAA free agent signing period in the spring.
