Moritz Seider Scores His First Goal as Red Wings Rally to Win 4-3

The Detroit Red Wings and Buffalo Sabres met for the first time this season and a quick Pius Suter goal got the Red WIngs going early. And after falling into a 3-1 hole, the Red Wings would take two quick Tyler Bertuzzi third period goals and an overtime winner from Moritz Seider to stun Buffalo with a 4-3 victory.

Suter’s goal came just 16 seconds into the game and was a well earned effort that saw the first year Red Wing repeatedly jam at the puck until it crossed the line. Though the Wings would take the early 1-0 lead, it would be a slow drop off from there.

Buffalo matched Detroit for the next 15 minutes and then started to control play as the period wound down. The second period saw the Red Wings chasing play more than dictating it and it would burn Detroit twice. The first was just on a nice play by Jeff Skinner, who appeared to shoot, dangled, curled around the net, and banked a puck off the side of the net just enough to pull Alex Nedeljkovic out of position.

The puck was picked up by Tage Thompson, who buried it and evened the game at one. The Red Wings had barely recovered before Joe Veleno was whistled for a hold. Buffalo’s Rasmus Dahlin notched his first goal of the season a long shot that gave Buffalo its first lead, 2-1.

For the remainder of the period, Detroit looked listless save one opportunity where Adam Erne and Givani Smith plugged away at a puck before a whistle ended that chance. Buffalo nearly scored in the dying seconds of the period but Nedeljkovic was brilliant again, making a point blank save that kept the deficit at one.

In the third, Buffalo scored again courtesy of but the Red Wings answered with just over six minutes left on a beautiful passing sequence from Lucas Raymond to Danny DeKeyser who then found a waiting Bertuzzi who buried his seventh goal of the season. Just over a minute later, it was Bertuzzi again who took a pass from Suter after Raymond started the play with a dart to the aforementioned Suter. Bertuzzi made a pretty move to get through Sabres defenders and snapped a shot into the net to tie the game.

The game would head to overtime where Seider would net his first NHL goal on a move where he outmuscled Rasmus Asplund, took the puck to the net and whipped it past Dustin Tokarski to complete the comeback and get the win.

After what looked like another rough game, the Red Wings flipped the script and came roaring back. They didn’t get a lot of secondary scoring, but honestly, who cares. What a thrilling win for the young team.

They’re back at it tomorrow against Vegas at Little Caesars Arena.
