Red Wings: Thoughts on Detroit’s 2021’s Prospect Tournament Roster

The Detroit Red Wings revealed their roster for September’s Prospect Tournament on Twitter this afternoon.

The tournament will run from Sept. 16 to Sept. 20. Held in Traverse City, MI, this year’s pool includes five teams from across the league: The Toronto Maple Leafs, the Columbus Blue Jackets, the Dallas Stars and the St. Louis Blues.

Here are some initial thoughts about the roster reveal:

Seider Will Be a Red Wing Day One

Detroit confirmed fan expectations of Seider with the reveal: he’s is no longer a prospect for the Red Wings. The goal for Seider in training camp will not be to make the roster, it’ll be to prepare for his first NHL start.

An Incomplete Look at Detroit’s Prospects

Although the Red Wings prospect tournament will give a good overview of some of the Wings better prospects, many of the top Europeans are missing. Simon Edvinsson, Albert Johansson, William Wallinder, Elmer Soderblom, Eemil Viro and Theodor Niederbach are some of the more important prospects missing from the roster. Fans will have to track these player through sites like Eliteprospects, as they’ll be developing over seas.

Raymond and Berggren Are the Players to Watch

The two most exciting players to watch during the tournament will be Lucas Raymond and Jonatan Berggren. After spending some time in the SHL, this will be the first time many North American fans get a look at the two (Unless you follow the excellent Twitter account Ice Hockey Gifs, which kept Red Wings fans informed about many of the team’s overseas prospects).

There are so many questions surrounding the pair. How quickly can the two transition their game to North American ice? Can Berggren sustain his elite point scoring with the Griffins (or maybe with Detroit) this season? Was Raymond’s relatively disappointing season in with Frolunda in the SHL a result of deployment and injuries, or is there still a good amount of growth needed? How quickly can Raymond turn into the playmaking winger that Detroit expects him to be? While the questions won’t be fully answered in the tournament, fans will finally get to know some of the top prospects in the organization.

A First Look at Sebastian Cossa

Most of the 2021 Draft Class will not be participating in the tournament, but fans will get a look at the goaltender Steve Yzerman selected in the first round.

Fans should not evaluate the pick based on Cossa’s performance in the tournament. However, it’ll be one of the more exciting storylines to watch as the training camp and the tourny progress.
