Toronto Maple Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs currently have a full roster and are almost $1.4 million over cap.  One way Toronto can get under cap is to trade William Nylander.  Nylander has a cap hit of $6,962,366.  If Detroit pays $1,000,000 of Larkin’s $6,100,000 contract for each of the next two years and absorbs Nylander’s contract for the next three years, both teams will benefit.

This scenario will put Toronto $400,000 under the cap and allow them to add a second or third line center for the next two years.  Multiple draft choices may also have to be included in this deal.

This trade would also move Detroit to approximately $63,900,000 or just over $17 million under the cap.

This trade would be beneficial because it would open up the center position for Joe Veleno.  The four centers on Detroit’s roster would be Pius Suter, Michael Rasmussen, Joe Veleno, and Mitchell Stephens.

This trade would also allow both Jonatan Berggren and Lucas Raymond a year to acclimate to the North American sized ice surface.  By next year, both players should be regular’s in the Detroit lineup.

Reality: Larkin is not traded to Toronto
