Jim Rutherford was a 1st round selection, 10th overall to Detroit in 1969.  Before turning professional, Rutherford played his junior hockey for the Hamilton Red Wings (OHA) for two seasons.  Rutherford played 13 years in the NHL including three stints and parts of nine seasons in Detroit.

He had a career record of 151-227-59 with 14 shutouts while playing in the NHL.  Rutherford is better known as a very successful NHL executive.  He has been an NHL owner (Minority Owner of Hartford), President, and General Manager of NHL teams since 1994.  In January 2021, Rutherford resigned as General Manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
