Anthony Mantha Traded to Washington
Anthony Mantha was drafted in the 1st round by Detroit, 20th overall in 2013. In 302 NHL games with Detroit, Mantha scored 95 goals and 194 points. During his first professional season with the Detroit organization, senior-vice president Jimmy Devellano called out Mantha because he didn’t seem to be playing very hard. Head coach Jeff Blashill uttered similar statements to Mantha during his tenure in Detroit. It was frustrating for fans to see Mantha’s talent go to waste. General Manager Steve Yzerman had seen enough and traded Mantha to Washington minutes before the trade deadline in April of this year.
Detroit received Jakub Vrana, Richard Panik and Washington’s first round selection in 2021.
Vrana promptly scored eight goals and 11 points in 11 games with Detroit. This week, the Red Wings and Vrana avoided arbitration when he signed a three year extension with a cap hit of $5.25 million for the next three years.
Richard Panik scored one goal and four points in 12 games with Detroit. He was dealt along with the #52 pick to the New York Islanders for Nick Leddy.
Detroit traded the Washington draft pick, 23rd overall, plus picks 48 and 138 to Dallas for pick #15. Detroit used this pick to select goaltender Sebastian Cossa from Edmonton (WHL). Cossa was the top ranked North American goalie and a future #1 goaltender for Detroit.
