Red Wings: A Look Back at Detroit’s Last Playoff Team

Defense

Mike Green was the top scoring defenseman in 2015-16.  It was his first season in Detroit after signing a three-year UFA contract.  He tallied 35 points in 74 games.  Green played parts of five seasons in Detroit before being traded to Edmonton at the deadline in 2020.  Green played two games with Edmonton before retiring prior to the 2021 season.

Niklas Kronwall was an alternate captain with the 2015-16 Red Wings.  He scored 26 points in 64 games.  Kronwall played three more seasons for Detroit before retiring.  Kronwall’s career lasted 15 seasons, all with Detroit, where he accumulated 432 points in 953 NHL games.

Danny DeKeyser scored 20 points in 78 games during 2015-16.  He is one of only two players, Dylan Larkin is the other, who remain with Detroit.  DeKeyser enters his 10th season in the NHL this fall before he becomes an UFA.

Brendan Smith scored 15 points in 63 games in 2015-16.  The former 1st round selection is now entering his 11th NHL season.  He last played for the New York Rangers before recently signing a one-year UFA contract with Carolina.

In 2015-16, Kyle Quincey was on his second tour playing for Detroit.  He scored 11 points in 47 games.  After 2016, Quincey signed an UFA contract with New Jersey before also playing for Columbus and Minnesota.  After his 13th NHL season, Quincey played one season in Liiga before announcing his retirement in 2019.

Alexei Marchenko’s most productive NHL campaign occurred in 2015-16 with Detroit.  He played 66 games and recorded 11 points.  He was claimed off waivers by Toronto in 2017.  He then moved to the KHL and will be entering his 5th season in the KHL next year.

Jakub Kindl played 25 games for Detroit before being traded for a 6th round draft pick in 2017.  Originally a 1st round selection of Detroit in 2005, Kindl played 331 games in the NHL scoring 74 points.  Most recently, Kindl played in the DEL in 2020.
