Detroit added veteran defenseman Ryan Murphy to a one year contract.  Murphy was originally drafted in the 1st round #12 overall by Carolina.  He has played parts of seven NHL seasons for Carolina, Minnesota and New Jersey.  He has scored 43 points in 175 NHL games.  During the previous two seasons, Murphy played 68 games in the KHL scoring 31 points.  When play resumed in the AHL last season, Murphy won the Eddie Shore award as the Top Defenseman.  Murphy will be excellent depth at the NHL level and will be a role model for the young defense if he ends up in Grand Rapids (AHL).

Dan Renouf signed a one year contract as a depth defenseman with Detroit.  He will most likely be a veteran presence on the Grand Rapids (AHL) blueline.  Renouf split last year between Colorado (AHL) and Colorado (NHL).  In the AHL, Renouf played five games and accumulated three points.  Renouf started his pro career signing a free agent contract with Detroit after playing three seasons at the University of Maine (NCAA).  Primarily an AHL level defenseman, Renouf has played six seasons in the AHL and scored 72 points in 279 games.
