The Canadiens surprise run to the finals was one of the most entertaining aspects of this year’s playoffs. The team that almost didn’t make it in ended up bouncing the Golden Knights, Maple Leafs and Jets on their way to the Stanley Cup Finals.

Although it was a great story, the team will be hard-pressed to come close to matching this performance next year. The run has taken general manager Marc Bergevin off the hot seat – for the time being. The Canadiens will probably get the playoffs again next year, but the roster is still a few pieces away from being a consistent playoff performer. With a projected $14.67 million in cap space next season, Montreal has the opportunity to really take the next step and start rounding out the roster.

Bertuzzi would make a fantastic addition. Playing in Jeff Blashill’s system, he’s already used to Montreal’s style of hockey – that low-event and low-scoring type that focuses on controlling pace of play. Bertuzzi is one of the rare players that can actually find a way to score in that offensive scheme. He could be a player that helps bridge the gap from fluke playoff team to legitimate playoff threat. The Canadiens have all of their draft picks in the next two seasons and a good amount of cap space. Bertuzzi is theirs if they are willing to make the deal.
