Albin Grewe

Albin Grewe was a 3rd round selection in 2019.  Grewe was supposed to play for Saginaw (OHL) last year, but due to the cancellation of the OHL season, he started his year playing for Djurgardens (SHL).  He scored six points in 39 games before signing an amateur contract with Grand Rapids (AHL).  Grewe will play for Ilves (Liiga) next year with the hope of signing an entry-level contract with Detroit.  Detroit has until June 1, 2023 to sign Grewe or he comes a free agent.

Sam Stange

2021 Team: University of Wisconsin (NCAA)

Sam Stange was a 4th round selection in 2020.  He just completed his freshman season in the NCAA.  Detroit owns Stange’s rights until August 15, 2024.

John Adams

2021 Team: Providence College (NCAA)

John Adams was a 6th round selection of Detroit in 2017.  He started his NCAA career with Union College.  He played two years at Union before transferring to Providence College.  Adams is on the move again, this time transferring to Notre Dame.  Detroit owns his rights until August 15, 2022 before he can become a free agent.

Ryan O’Reilly

2021 Team: Green Bay (USHL)

Ryan O’Reilly was a 4th round selection in 2018.  He will play his freshman season for Arizona State (NCAA) next year.  Detroit owns O’Reilly’s rights until August 15, 2024.

Kienan Draper

2021 Team: Omaha (USHL)

Kienan Draper was a 7th round selection in 2020.  He played the exhibition schedule for Chiliwack (BCHL), but moved to play for Omaha (USHL) for most of the season.  Draper will move on to play for Miami-Ohio (NCAA) as a freshman next year.  Detroit owns Draper’s rights until August 15, 2025.

Final Thoughts

The Detroit Red Wings need to continue to add players to all forward positions.  One right winger at the NHL level may be lost to Seattle during the Expansion Draft.  Aging veterans also contribute to the need to add players at right wing.  This year’s Entry Draft is not deep when it comes to right wingers.  Players available to Detroit at pick 22 may include: Dylan Guenther (can play either wing), Fabian Lysell, Fyodor Svechkov (can play any forward position), or Oskar Olausson (plays either wing).
