Steve Yzerman was always my favorite player on the ice, and when he left to turn Tampa into a powerhouse as an executive, I pined for the day I could write this: he’s beginning to change the culture back and bring in the talent desperately needed.

Like the others who wrote, I’ve been heartened by the strong play of Bernier, Ryan, and Zadina. But what has given me the most hope is the talent that’s on the cusp of getting to Detroit and transitioning this rebuild into a force to be reckoned with. Moritz Seider appears ready to take the next step in his professional career. Jonatan Berggren has evolved into the offensive threat the Wings thought he would be when they drafted him in 2018. Lucas Raymond, though injured, showed that he will provide that timely scoring desperately needed in Detroit. Another Yzerman choice, Albert Johansson, could be paired with Seider and create a blue line envied by the league.

Throw in Keith Petruzzeli, who is in the Hobey Baker conversation, and now there’s legitimate claim that the pipeline is stocked and ready to contribute soon.  I know that Pertuzzeli and Berggren were both Holland picks, but the other three are Yzerman’s. Not to mention the other scores of players he’s taken that will be making an impact.

The future is bright. Once again, the Captain will pull this franchise out of the ashes and bring them into prominence again.
