Detroit Red Wings Shutout 3-0 by Dallas Stars, Khudobin

In spite of Dennis Cholowski‘s finally getting a look with the big club, the Detroit Red Wings were unable to notch their third consecutive victory. The Dallas Stars avenged their 3-2 loss Thursday night with a 3-0 shutout of Detroit. The Wings had a few quality chances, none better than a streaking Robby Fabbri who was stoned by Anton Khudobin. It turned out to be too few in a performance that saw the Red Wings’ two-game winning streak snapped.

Red Wings Unable to Generate Any Offense

It was just one of those games for the Red Wings, who struggled to get anything going offensively. Fabbri, who has been finding the net lately, was unable to get a lot of room on the ice sans the chance in the third. Filip Zadina continues to be snakebitten when it comes to the goal scoring department. Anthony Mantha was pretty quiet all night. Once Dallas scored on the power play to make it 3-0, the Red Wings comeback hopes were sealed off. This is not a team that’s going to rally from a three goal deficit. I write that without malice–it’s just the truth.

Will Cholowski Get Another Shot?

If anything prevents Cholowski from seeing another game, it might be the first goal which saw him chasing the play.

To be fair, it looks like a bad change that led to the break, but Cholowski had jumped up a bit in the play, which led to Tanner Kero having way too much space to make a play and score.

This is what I’d like to see: Cholowski given a chance to work those plays out at the NHL level. It shouldn’t be a punishment in ice time or a benching. Let the kid learn from it. If it’s a continuous problem and one that consistently causes the Red Wings goals, then the writing is on the wall. But at some point, you have to let them learn.

Final Thoughts

Thank goodness for March Madness because it masked what was a pretty ho-hum game for the Red Wings. For every exciting game like Thursday’s, there’s going be a couple stinkers like tonight’s. Detroit is back at it on Tuesday.
