Red Wings Doomed by Terrible Second Period, Lose 4-1
The Detroit Red Wings missed their injured players dearly in this blowout loss in Columbus. The top line was without two of it’s starters, as Tyler Bertuzzi and Dylan Larkin continue to recover from injuries. The defense has also struggled from Troy Stecher’s absence.
The Red Wings looked noticeably deflated without their key players.
The first period was relatively solid for the Red Wings. After giving up a shorthanded goal, the Red Wings rebounded on their next power play, as Anthony Mantha finally broke his cold streak with a goal. The shots were even at the end of the first, 10-10.
However, the wheels came off completely in the second. Outshot 16 to 4, the Wings gave up three consecutive goals, each sniped top shelf. The third saw no scoring.
Thursday’s matchup against Carolina is going to be just as tough. The Wings are going to be without Larkin and Bertuzzi, while Stecher is still day to day.

Game Notes
- After a long goal less stretch, the power play on fire as Mantha’s goal was the third consecutive game that the Wings have scored with a man advantage. However, the first power play attempt resulted in a shorthanded goal for the Jackets.
- The penalty kill yielded another goal tonight, continuing its struggles.
- Jonathan Bernier’s hot streak finally ended, as he was pulled during the second intermission. Thomas Greiss stepped in and was able to bounce back after a disastrous outing on Sunday.
- Net coverage continues to be a problem for the Wings. In seemingly every game, the Red Wings have left the front of the net nearly completely open, which has resulted in a goal every time.
