The Detroit Red Wings were able to keep pace but in the end, penalties and a lack of scoring–the reoccurring theme–did them in as they lost to Nashville. There were a number of perplexing decisions during this contest. But onto the goals. And then the complaints.

Robby Fabbri scored off of a beautiful feed from Anthony Mantha, who looked strong all game long. Maybe everyone can back off the ledge when it comes to him.

Only 27 seconds after Nashville took a 2-1 lead, Marc Staal (!) ripped a shot past Pekka Rinne and tied the game at two.

Detroit took two consecutive penalties in the third but successfully killed both. But the Predators would get the game winning goal with just 59 seconds left in the game. Detroit loses their second straight and falls to 3-10-2.

A few other thoughts

    • Frans Nielsen needs to sit. And yet I don’t think he will until that contract ceases to exist. I shouldn’t waste any more space with this, but it’s getting to infuriating 2014 Dan Cleary like levels.
    • It will be very interesting to see if Givani Smith pays for a bad penalty with a lineup spot in the next game. This is what drives fans nuts–Smith did what kids do. If it becomes a habit, then it’s understood. But it’s been a quick hook for younger players while veterans have been given far more leeway. Matthias Brome will probably pay for his mishap that led to the winning goal with another taxi squad visit.
    • Darren Helm left with a lower body injury and we’ll see how that shakes things up. Taro Hirose should be the next man up but I think the smart money is on Valtteri Filppula.
    • The power play is at levels of just absolute disaster. I don’t even have superlatives to describe it. It was such a contrast between Detroit’s and Nashville where the Predators are in constant motion. Take a look at their goal. It’s not this slow, set spot where you can predict–pass-pass-one timer-block-clear. Instead, there’s fluidity, movement, quick passes, and a shot.

Here’s the captain postgame:

Must Read. Could any of these three Red Wings be traded?. light

They’re back at it on Saturday. Maybe the power play can find itself between then and now.
