The Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) signed Detroit Red Wings 2019 third-round pick Albin Grewe Monday. Here’s what that means.

There is no telling when Detroit Red Wings prospect Albin Grewe will get to suit up in a real game, but it’ll be with the Saginaw Spirit once he does.

Yesterday the Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) announced the signing of the Red Wings’ third-round pick from 2019 via the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Import Draft, and now will be a short drive up Interstate 75 for Red Wings fans when they’re allowed to attend games again.

Grewe was the No. 66 pick in the 2019 NHL Draft and has been playing overseas in his native Sweden for the past four years with Djurgadens, a professional ice hockey team based in Stockholm, Sweden.

The right winger who had 52 career goals – seven of which came this past season (42 games) – overall had a disappointing season with a team he was anticipated to play a larger role with.

Now, instead of progressing into the American Hockey League (AHL), Grewe finds himself backtracking to the OHL where he’ll have the chance to try and limit the penalties that negatively impacted his play last season.

Unfortunately, that means little to his immediate future with the Red Wings.

With the move, Grewe has a better opportunity to plan meaningful minutes against lower-level competition and try to improve his offensive game and overall skillset as he aims to readjust his career back on track to join the Grand Rapids Griffins in the future.

In the short-term it’s a move that gives Grewe a better chance to do just that than to be thrown into the AHL and losing even more confidence in his game.

While it’s disappointing news for a Red Wings prospect, it’s an opportunity for him to get back on track and chase a spot with the Griffins or Red Wings in the future.
