The Detroit Red Wings have made the semifinals of the NHL on NBC’s “Franchise Faceoff.”

The Detroit Red Wings need your help.

Last month, the NHL on NBC Twitter account provided some social media entertainment by creating the “Franchise Faceoff,” a Twitter poll to determine which NHL franchise could put together the all-time of all-time all-star lists.

Five players and a goalie.

When you win 11 Stanley Cups in franchise history and are nicknamed ‘Hockeytown,” you could predict that the Red Wings were going to be in the hunt…and they are.

It’s the final four and they’re up against those pesky Pittsburgh Penguins, rekindling the rivalry from the mid-to-late 2000s.  Before I go any further, you can vote here on the all-star lineup you want (you better pick the Red Wings).

More from Octopus Thrower

The Penguins trot out a trio of superstars in Mario Lemieux, Sidney Crosby and Jaromir Jagr – which is the core of this mini franchise all-star team. The others include Kris Letang, Paul Coffey and Marc-Andre Fleury. Not sure I like the Coffey on the Penguins call. He technically played for the Red Wings, too, although he was much more productive with the Penguins during the prime of his career.

On the Red Wings side, it’s as loaded as one can imagine. Steve Yzerman, Gordie Howe, Sergei Fedorov, Mr. Perfect Nicklas Lidstrom, Red Kelly and Terry Sawchuk.

Biased aside, not sure how the Penguins are better when you have a trio of Yzerman, Fedorov and Mr. Hockey, but after a few hours of the poll being up, Pittsburgh had the lead 60.8%-39.2%.

The Red Wings have the better all-star lineup in my opinion, but my guess is the relevancy of more recent, recognizable players such as Crosby, Jagr, Letang and Fleury  are fueling the early results.

So like I said, go out and vote to help the Red Wings get the better of Crosby and company and avenge the 2009 Stanley Cup Finals.
