The Vegas Golden Knights were screwed in game seven a few nights ago in San Jose. That blown call could actually help the Detroit Red Wings in the future.

When the Detroit Red Wings traded veteran forward Gustav Nyquist to the San Jose Sharks for a second-round pick in the 2019 NHL Entry Level draft along with a three-round pick in the 2020 draft that could become a second round pick if the Sharks reach the NHL finals this season or decide to re-sign Nyquist.

It was a pretty good deal for Ken Holland to make, Nyquist was having a career year statistically although his goal production has dropped significantly from earlier in his career he’s still a 20-goal scorer. Over his last three seasons, he’s scored 55 goals, this season he recorded a career-high 60 points in 81 games played. He also owned a very respectable CF% at 53.7% at even strength.

His career CF percentage is very acceptable at 53.2%. Nyquist who has struggled throughout his career to produce in the playoffs has recorded 3 assists in the first seven games for the Sharks. Before landing in San Jose, he’d only registered 8 points in 35 career playoff games.

During game seven of the first-round, the Vegas Golden Knights were up to the tune of 3-0 on the San Jose Sharks when forward Joe Pavelski was cross-checked by Cody Eakin then lost his balance and was pushed a bit by Paul Stastny who was trying to get out to the point after the Knights lost the draw. Joe fell to the ice violently as he smashed his head onto the ice.

The officials granted a five-minute major penalty to the San Jose Sharks with around ten minutes to play in the third period. It was in no way a major penalty, Eakin could have been called for a two-minute minor cross-checking penalty.

San Jose would go on to score four times on the major infraction including seven seconds into the power-play behind a Logan Couture goal; he would also score the third goal. Tomas Hertl, and Kevin Labanc also each scored on the power-play to give the Sharks a stunning 4-3 lead.

Jonathan Marchessault scored in the final minute of regulation to send the game into overtime. The Sharks got the game-winner from Barclay Goodrow with less than two minutes to go in overtime.

Wings Need Steve Yzerman to Help With 2019 Draft Prep. dark. Next

Although the call was botched, it certainly could end up helping the Detroit Red Wings add another second-round pick to their cupboard of draft choices. Oddly enough I am rooting for the Sharks, not because of Gus Nyquist but because Steve Yzerman was a proven draft wizard with Tampa Bay, adding impact players throughout the mid-rounds. So, a botched call in the playoffs could help the Wings without the team even taking part in the postseason, go Sharks.
