The Detroit Red Wings have acquired 23-year-old defenseman Madison Bowey along with a second-round pick in 2020.  But who is Madison Bowey and what should we expect from him in the future?

The Detroit Red Wings sent Nick Jensen to the Capitals in the deal that landed Madison Bowey.  Also, they threw in a 5th round pick in this summers’ draft.  The Wings have a plethora of draft picks in the 2019 NHL Entry Level Draft; nine picks to be exact.  As it stands, they still have the potential to add to that pool of picks before tomorrow’s 3 pm est trade deadline.

The Wings already have their own second round pick along with the New York Islanders second-round choice in 2019.  That is primarily the reason Ken Holland decided to settle on a “future’s” pick in this trade.  Now the team has a pair of second rounders in both 2019 and 2020.

So what do we know about Madison Bowey?  He was a born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in April of 1995.  He’s a right-handed shot, an offensive-minded defender who plays with a bit of an edge to his game.  He played four full seasons as a member of the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League.  He’s shown leadership traits as he was nominated team captain during his time in Kelowna.

In each of his final two seasons with the Rockets, he recorded back to back 60 point seasons. His last season he achieved 60 points, including 17 goals in just 58 games.  In each of his final two playoff runs with the Rockets, he finished exactly with a point per game outburst.

Bowey would be drafted in the second round by the Washington Capitals 53rd overall in the 2013 NHL Entry Level Draft.  He played one full season with the Hersey Bears of the American Hockey League, the affiliate of the Caps.  He produced a solid rookie campaign as a professional recording 29 points in 70 games and was a plus 22.

Over the last two seasons, he’s been up and down between the Capitals and the Bears.  In 84 career NHL games, he’s recorded 1 goal and 18 points with an even rating.  In those 84 games, he possesses a 45% CF, which is not good especially playing on a Stanley Cup-winning club.
