The Detroit Red Wings continued to fly high after winning three straight heading into the home match-up with the Edmonton Oilers.  It lasted a total of twelve seconds.

The Edmonton Oilers star 21-year-old captain Connor McDavid won the opening draw, and Drake Caggiula snapped a shot past Detroit Red Wings goaltender Jonathan Bernier.  When you give up a goal that quickly in any period it is incredibly disheartening.  When you give up a goal that fast to start a game, it is demoralizing.

For the Wings, it was a night of all unlikely goal scorers.  Well maybe besides Tyler Bertuzzi who continues to deliver.  Bertuzzi has been providing that depth scoring the Wings have needed so much over the last couple of seasons.  He already has 5 goals on the season, which is good for ranking second on the team only one behind Larkin.  Bert is on pace for 29 goals on the season if he can find a way to continue producing at this pace.

After the ugly start, the Wings seemed to struggle to keep up with the Oilers through two periods.  They did, however, get a goal from Jacob de La Rose.  Not necessarily known as a goal-scoring threat but he was able to chip in.  Michael Rasmussen extending his point streak to 3 games assisting on the tally.

Danny DeKeyser netted a goal in the second period, his first goal of the season in his first game back from a hand injury that has kept him sidelined for the previous nine games.  The ugly part of his night was finishing as a minus 3.  He and Trevor Daley struggled on the night containing the Oilers push.

Dennis Cholowski had a hiccup behind his on goal losing the puck to an Oiler forward who poked the puck out to Kyle Brodziak, and he buried the first of his two on the night.  He would end up with the game-winning goal in the third period.

Jonathan Bernier continues to struggle to live up to his expectations.  He has proven that he is uncomfortable playing the puck.  The failed to leave his crease to stop a puck behind his goal, and the puck would end up in the back of his net shortly after.  Understanding the Wings got outshot 42-26, it was an uphill battle for Bernier all evening, but he didn’t help himself as he would want two of the four goals allowed back.  Jimmy Howard has clearly outplayed Bernier through the first 14 games of the season.

The Wings will host the Vancouver Canucks Tuesday night at 7:30 pm Est.

Bonus; The Grand Rapids Griffins were able to fend off the Milwaukee Admirals last night at home in the Van Andel Arena.  The tend of unlikely scorers continued, similar to the Detroit Red Wings the Grand Rapids Griffins received a goal from someone used to using his hands for activities other than scoring goals.  Rugged defenseman Dylan Mcilrath scored the game-winner for the Griffins.

The Griffins beat the Admirals 2-1.  Christoffer Ehn scored the first goal for the club.  That was his first tally on North American ice.  He played well enough in camp to earn a job to start the season for the Detroit Red Wings but struggled to gain confidence and at times became invisible on the ice.  It is good that he is beginning to find his way in the American Hockey League.  He seems better suited for that skill level at this time.

Filip Zadina sent a rocket towards the goal on a one-timer that found iron.  He came so close to delivering a power-play goal.  The kid is starting to become dangerous on a nightly basis.  He still looks like he needs to develop his entire game, but his offensive presence is growing more and more apparent.  Zadina has 5 points, 2 goals in 10 games.  Matt Puempel paces the Griffins with a team-leading 8 points, 4 goals in 10 games.
