Some names all Detroit Red Wings fans know and are rooting for to make the team out of training camp are Dennis Cholowski, Filip Hronek and Joe Hicketts.  I would like to throw another name in the defensive group, Libor Sulak.

The Detroit Red Wings are looking for a push from the defense, and it seems the Wings are going to have one or two spots open. Libor Sulak is solid, not just on defense but offense as well.  Wings general manager Ken Holland signed Sulak and Sulak has delivered thus far.  In 35 games played Libor Sulak had 27 points.

Let that sink in for a minute, a defenseman with 27 points in so few games. He’s 23 years old, and he would fit right into the young Detroit lineup. He’s a much needed left-handed shooting defensive player. He would provide a shot in the arm to the Red Wings blueline.

With job openings on the Wings roster, it may be a “let the best man win” mentality from management.  That does nothing but create competition in training camp. That is a good thing. Sulak is known for creating chances in the offensive zone, he skates very well and is quick side to side.

There is a reason Libor Sulak has shot up the prospect chart. His solid play in both ends, as well as his work on the penalty kill, has gotten his coaches’ attention.

Playing last season in the Finnish league has done nothing but honed Sulak’s skill and prepared him for an NHL career. It is no secret the Detroit Red Wings need to be overhauled. It seems that by seasons end there is a real possibility as four young defensive players will be cemented in the Red Wings depth chart.

In my opinion, Filip Hronek and Libor Sulak will break camp with the Detroit hockey team and be on the ice when the team plays the Columbus Blue Jackets October 4. In a wide-open camp, this is what is both needed and demanded in a rebuild.

Both Hronek and Sulak will be part of the Winged Wheels blueline for some time to come. Both are second line, fringe first line defenseman. They will go along way in healing a unit that needs it most.

Speed kills, you have heard it over and over. Sulak is fast. At 6′ 2″ 208 lbs Libor Sulak and his speed is set to help the blueline. I urge all Detroit Red Wing fans to commit his name to your memory. Soon you will have no choice but to remember his name.
