Detroit Red Wings: Expect big things from Anthony Mantha

DETROIT, MI - FEBRUARY 06: Anthony Mantha

The Detroit Red Wings need scoring. More than that they need a go-to guy during the rebuilding process. A guy who teammates, coaches, and fans can get behind. I believe Anthony Mantha is that guy.

At 6′ 5″ 214 lbs, Anthony Mantha is a big strong and lightning fast right wing. During his go-round with the Detroit Red Wings in 2015-16 (cannot call it a rookie season playing 10 games) Anthony scored 2 goals, 1 assist along with 3 points. Again this was only just a quick look.

Anthony Mantha’s actual rookie season in 2016-17 see the winger put up 17 goals, 17 assists, and 34 points. Not bad. Certainly, Detroit Red Wings general manager saw enough to know Mantha was and is the kind of player who could help the Wings light the lamp.

Then last season. 2017-18, Mantha began to put it all together, and his game achieved a new level of consistency. 24 goals, 24 assists while amassing  48 points. Anthony Mantha is turning into a franchise player.

As Detroit Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill encouraged Mantha to move around without the puck, it freed him up for better looks at the net. Blashill seemed to have found the unleash button. Heading into the 2018-19 NHL season Anthony Mantha is a legit threat to hit 30 goals.

Playing on the first line with Dylan Larkin makes this a dangerous line. As Mantha scores more, Larkin’s points will go up, and the first line group will be more feared as they play with more snarl.

One thing I and I’m sure other Detroit Red Wings fans would like to know is if the coaches will decide to put Mantha out in front of the net on the power play or will he play from a shooting spot.

Fans can count on Anthony to continue to become more consistent. He has shown that drive and determination to up his game. At just 23 years old Anthony Mantha’s best years are ahead of him. He will certainly be a core player as the dust settles on the Winged Wheel’s rebuild.

Mantha may be the most natural goal scorer on the team. I realize people will suggest newly drafted Filip Zadina, however as of right now Zadina is not on the Red Wings roster. The sky is the limit given Mantha’s skill set.

One thing that Anthony Mantha needs to work on is his defense. As a big winger Mantha should be checking players and taking the puck from them on a regular basis.  I’m sure his coaches have talked to him about this. It is indeed the last piece he needs, to become a complete player. Do not be shocked if Mantha ups his defensive game.
