The Detroit Red Wings came up with a big 5-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins at home after a difficult last few weeks.
It was one of the Red Wings best performances of the past month to date with a couple of milestones thrown in as well. There were lots of goals and big plays in what was an entertaining night at Little Caesars Arena.
Game Timeline
Sidney Crosby started the proceedings off quickly with a goal just 38 seconds into the game. His goal was his 27th of the season.
At the 16:43 mark of the first period, Niklas Kronwall recorded his 400th career National Hockey League point with a game-tying goal.
In the second period, the Red Wings would score two goals to take a 3-1 lead into the second intermission.
Frans Nielsen scored on the power play after a nice setup from Martin Frk and then Luke Glendening tipped a puck in front for his 10th goal of the season.
Another Red Wings forward would score his 10th of the season in the third period, Darren Helm dispatched a pass from Dylan Larkin past Matt Murray to make it 4-1.
Kris Letang blasted home a shot late in the third to cut the deficit to two goals but Glendening would slot home an empty-net goal to put the game away and record his second goal of the night.
Game Notes
- The Red Wings outshot the Penguins 26 to 24.
- Joe Hicketts had two points for the Red Wings in his first game since getting called up on Monday night. His assist on Nielsen’s second period goal marked his first career NHL point.
- Jimmy Howard got the win in net. He stopped 22 of the 24 shots he faced.
- Helm led all Red Wings skater with three points (two assists, one goal).
