A huge save from Sergei Bobrovsky with just seconds remaining saw the Columbus Blue Jackets hold on to defeat the Detroit Red Wings.
Columbus has now won five consecutive games as the Red Wings have lost five consecutive games.
Game Timeline
Matt Calvert gave the Blue Jackets the lead in the first period. The goal came on a shorthanded break as the Red Wings gave up a shorthanded goal for the second consecutive game.
The lead only lasted 21 seconds. Darren Helm got the Red Wings on the board to make it a 1-1 game shortly after Calvert’s goal.
Much like Thursday night’s game against the Vegas Golden Knights, the second period was where the game got away from the Red Wings.
Seth Jones scored a pair of goals to make it 3-1 at the second intermission.
His first goal came on an odd man rush as he blasted home a one-timer set up by Artemi Panarin.
Jones finished a rebound in front for his second of the night. It was his second career multi-goal game.
The first half of the third period resembled a Blue Jackets power play more than anything. However, Andreas Athanasiou scored on an odd man rush to bring the Wings right back into the game with three minutes remaining.
In the final seconds of the game Helm was presented with a golden opportunity to send the game to overtime as he was left wide open in the slot. Bobrovsky was there to make the save, however, as it finished 3-2 at Nationwide Arena.
Game Notes
- Jared Coreau got the start in net and finished with 33 saves.
- The Blue Jackets outshot the Red Wings 36 to 24.
- Both teams were 0 for 2 on the power play.
