A third-period comeback fell short in overtime as the Detroit Red Wings were edged in overtime for the second consecutive night.

On Friday night, the Red Wings lost to the New York Rangers 2-1 in overtime and on Saturday night it was a 4-3 loss to the New Jersey Devils in the extra period.

This was the Wings fourth consecutive loss as they will leave this week with only two points from a possible six.

How it Happened

It was just the start the Red Wings needed as they went ahead just 34 seconds into the game. David Booth had a shot from Xavier Ouellet bounce off his stick and past Keith Kinkaid for the early 1-0 lead.

The Devils would answer later in the period with Brian Boyle redirecting a shot that fooled Petr Mrazek to equalize.

Taylor Hall scored just four minutes later as he continues his impressive form. The forward had played a vital role in the Devils’ 3-2 win the night before against the Vancouver Canucks.

After a scoreless second period, the third period would yield three more goals.

The first goal of the third period belonged to rookie Nico Hischier who put one past Jimmy Howard. Petr Mrazek had been pulled earlier in the period for concussion protocol after a collision.

Anthony Mantha would reignite the Red Wings with a goal just 48 seconds after Hischier’s tally. The snipe into the top right corner gives Mantha 11 goals on the season.

Booth recorded his second goal of the game to tie things up and the comeback was on.

In overtime, the Devils would take advantage of a turnover in the Red Wings defensive zone as Brian Gibbons fired home the unassisted game-winner.
