For the third time this season, the Detroit Red Wings were met with defeat in overtime as they fell to the New York Rangers 2-1 on Friday night.

This was the third overtime loss for the Wings this season as they have yet to win a game in overtime. The Rangers were able to come back in the third period after going down 1-0 and then complete the rally with Mats Zuccarello’s game-winner.

How it Happened

Neither team was able to put one in the net in the first two periods as both Jimmy Howard and Henrik Lundqvist produced fantastic saves on both ends of the ice.

The first goal of the game would come on the power play for the Red Wings. Tomas Tatar scored on a perfectly placed one-timer past Lundqvist to give the away side a 1-0 advantage.

The lead would only last six minutes as the Rangers leveled the score just past the halfway mark of the third period. Chris Kreider put it past Howard for his eighth goal of the season.

In overtime, it was Zuccarello who would be the hero for the Rangers. The Wings were unable to clear the puck as Brady Skjei fed the puck to a wide-open Zuccarello who sniped one into the back of the net.

Game Notes

  • The Red Wings outshot the Rangers 41 to 31.
  • Howard made 29 saves on 31 shots faced.
  • The Wings have lost to the Rangers in three of their last four meetings.
  • Trevor Daley left the game in the first period with an upper-body injury and did not return.
