The Columbus Blue Jackets defeated the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday night in a shootout thriller.

It all came down to a shootout after a thrilling overtime and the Blue Jackets came out the victors as Jack Johnson made a nice move to end it in the ninth round of the shootout.

How it Happened

A Red Wings turnover less than two minutes into the first period resulted in the first goal of the game. Oliver Bjorkstrand fed the puck to Artemi Panarin who slotted home his third goal of the season for the Jackets.

The Blue Jackets would have a golden opportunity to extend their lead late in the opening period when a penalty shot was awarded to Josh Anderson. In the ensuing attempt, Anderson was stopped by Howard as the Blue Jackets entered the locker room up by just one goal.

After a great display of goaltending in the second period from Howard and Sergei Bobrovsky, the Red Wings would find the game-tying goal in the third period.

Niklas Kronwall set up Andreas Athanasiou from close range and the forward made no mistake as he scored his second goal of the season.

Despite multiple breakaway opportunities, the Red Wings were unable to find a winner in overtime. Additionally, a late Blue Jackets power play did not yield any real chances for the away side.

In the shootout, Frans Nielsen dispatched the opening shootout attempt to give the Wings the early advantage. However, Panarin would strike again as he tied things up in the second round.

Neither team could find the back of the net as both goaltenders stood tall in net. Finally, in the ninth round, Johnson got the puck past Howard to end the Red Wings 12-game shootout win streak.
