For the third consecutive game, the Detroit Red Wings came up short as they fell to the Washington Capitals on Friday night.

The red-hot Alex Ovechkin could not be stopped. It came down to the wire against the Capitals but in the end, it was the Russian forward who found the back of the net in overtime to win it for the away side.

How it Happened

After a scoreless first period, Darren Helm broke the deadlock in the second period with his first shorthanded goal of the season.

Andre Burakovsky would tie it up with less than a minute remaining in the second to send both teams into the locker room tied at 1-1.

The third period would prove to be exciting and frustrating for the Wings. They went behind just a minute into the period as Jay Beagle finished a shorthanded breakaway for his first goal of the season.

Tomas Tatar would answer with two goals of his own at 5:24 and 12:45 of the third period.

A late delay of game call on Dylan Larkin would result in one last power play opportunity for the Capitals. As a result, the Caps pulled Brayden Holtby in search of the game-tying goal.

Despite the Wings best efforts T.J. Oshie would score with just one minute remaining after some great patience and vision by Buraovsky in front of the net.

In overtime, another penalty put the Red Wings in trouble as Trevor Daley was sent to the box for tripping up Ovechkin. After missing a few opportunities throughout the game, the Capitals captain did not disappoint his team in overtime as he blasted home the game-winner for his 10th goal of the season.
