The Detroit Red Wings fell to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday night as Auston Matthews scored the game-winning goal.

It was a close game between the Leafs and Wings at Little Caesars Arena on Friday. The two Atlantic Division sides were tied heading into the third period before the Leafs found the back of the net early on and would hold on for the victory.

How it Happened

The Maple Leafs found themselves in front early on as Mitch Marner scored on a rocket of a shot just three minutes into the game,

Gustav Nyquist would tie things up later in the first period with his third goal of the preseason. Henrik Zetterberg provided the assist.

Much like the first period, the Leafs took the lead just three minutes into the period. This time it was William Nylander who provided the goal for the away side.

Luke Glendening scored his first goal of the preseason to make it 2-2 as Ben Street recorded the assist.

The Leafs game-winning goal came from their star player Matthews who was wide open in front of the net.

Leo Komarov netted the empty-netter to secure the Maple Leafs 4-2 win.

Game Notes

-Jimmy Howard made 23 saves in net on 26 shots faced.

-The Maple Leafs outshot the Wings 27 to 23.

-The Wings were 0-5 on the power play.

-Martin Frk led the Wings with four shots on goal.

-Joe Hicketts was laying people out left and right. He had five hits on the night.
