The Detroit Red Wings prospects finished up the 2017 National Hockey League Prospects Tournament with a 5-1 loss to the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday.

Despite closing out the prospects tournament with a loss, the Red Wings prospects still showed moments of promise. The unit struggled to put away chances throughout the tournament and it showed on the score sheet.

Once again on Tuesday, the Wings failed to produce on the power play, going 0-5. A first-period goal from Luke Kutkevicius was not enough to see the Red Wings to victory as the Blues would score five unanswered to take the fifth game of the tournament.

The young Wings were only outshot by one but the finishing was not there.

Grand Rapids Griffins head coach Todd Nelson talked about the game and tournament following the loss.

It was a chippy game between the two sides as there was a total of 17 penalties called, including 10 in the second period alone. Dominik Shine and Cole Fraser both picked up majors for fighting.

The Blues were led by Tage Thompson who produced three points, two of which were goals.

Kaden Fulcher got the start for the Red Wings in net and went the distance. He would finish with 23 saves on 28 shots faced.

Training Camp Awaits

There was certainly a sense of anticipating to watch first-round prospects Michael Rasmussen and Dennis Cholowski. However, neither player was able to put them in a better position entering training camp.

As we enter the training camp, the prospects that appeared in the tournament will have to produce something extraordinary if they hope to make the first team roster. It looks more likely that players like Rasmussen and Cholowski may spend at least the first part of the season in the WHL.

Other players like Shine and Dylan Sadowy elevated themselves a bit. Both had a solid showing on the offensive side of the ice.

The Red Wings training camp gets underway on Friday and will run through Monday.
