Detroit Red Wings rally late, lose 5-4 in Overtime
The Detroit Red Wings fell to the Chicago Blackhawks 5-4 Tuesday night. Here’s our take.
The Game in 8 words or Less
It’s just preseason, but hockey is thankfully back.
What happened
The Red Wings furiously rallied in the third, tying the Hawks after falling into a 4-1 hole.
The Red Wings got down early 2-0 on a goal that looked like it could have been called a high stick, and another that Hawks Captain Jonathan Toews absolutely blistered a shot past Jimmy Howard to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead. Teuvo Tarivanen scored a power play goal for the Hawks in the second period, batting a rebound through the five hole.

The expectation tonight could not have been for a win. With the Red Wings trotting out the kids against the Blackhawks “A” team, it was foolish to think they would do any more than they did.
Yet they did. And maybe it’s the first glowing sign of the Blashill era–never say die.
Anthony Mantha notched his first goal of the pre-season–a beauty of a one-timer, and the Larkin line played well in the face of some stingy competition. Ryan Garbutt added a fourth goal after the Wings turned it over in the own zone in the third. But the Wings fought back and tied it with 3 goals in the third period. Riley Sheahan started it with a goal off the faceoff, Pulkkinen cashed in on a rebound, and Glendening also recorded one via a rebound.
The Hawks won in OT on a 3 on 1 chance where Ryan Sproul and Tom McCollum were left helpless. Regardless of the outcome, it was a terrific effort in the rally.
Goals:
Mantha (1) – Miele, Paetsch
Sheahan (1) – Unassisted
Pulkkinen (1) – Miele, Mantha
Glendening (1) – Athanasiou, Sheahan

4 Tentacles Up
1. Larkin-Mantha-Pulkkinen line. They scored a goal, and nearly got another right after, sustaining pressure in the zone. Larkin played responsible hockey and led a couple scoring chances. Mantha had a strong showing–and somewhere even Jimmy Devellano smiled. Pulkky scored later, though Larkin was not out there.
2. Tom McCollum– Faced a tough Hawks team and stood tall with 14 saves on 16 attempts. Had absolutely no chance on the game winning goal.
3. Riley Sheahan – Rewarded for a couple early chances with a goal in the third. Also had an assist on Glendening’s tying goal.
4. Andy Miele – All over the ice tonight. Looked fantastic and recorded two assists.
4 Tentacles Down
1. Blackhawks fans. Even in the preseason, they’re as incorrigible as ever.
2. Jimmy Howard – Not a great showing for a guy who is fighting for his job. The first goal was not his fault, and he was flat out beat on the second goal. The third goal was some luck, but caused because he allowed a rebound to a waiting Teravanian. It’s obviously the kids and better defensemen are going to have a little more presence. But he’s got to be better.
3. Local TV – Why is this game not televised? Why are all Red Wings preseason games not televised? They’re the most meaningful professional team in the D right now, and yet the fan base couldn’t see the game in the home state. That needs to be addressed.
4. Re-writing the recap. Just kidding. Love the comeback from the kids.
